There's one box everyone needs. It can be any color, size, shape, or material that suits you. Personally, I prefer a medium-sized, clear, plastic storage bin with a lid. I purchased mine from Walmart. The purpose of the box is what is important, and that purpose is to serve as a memory box. Here's why you need one...
You know when you're trying to clean, tidy up, or declutter and you see that special card your daughter made you? You can't possibly throw it away, but it's cluttering up your desk and you're worried something might spill on it or tear it. Put it in the memory bin. Have a special certificate you earned at work that you don't need on the wall? Put it in your memory bin. What about your deceased mother's favorite sweater? Put it in the memory bin. We have so many sentimental items that don't have a specific home and can easily get misplaced or messed up. We can alleviate worrying about them by simply placing them in our memory box. Doing this also helps us pare down what we have. If something you want to keep doesn't fit in the box, you have to decide which items are important enough to take up the valuable space in your memory box. This helps limit the number and size of items you can keep.
If you're reading this post, I'm willing to bet you have more than comfortably fits in your home. Having a memory box will help you worry less about misplacing a special item, because you will always know exactly where your most prized possessions are. I recommend having a separate box for each member of your family. As your children move away, they can easily take their bins with them.
BONUS!
Don't put these bins in the back corner of your garage or under a huge stack of boxes in your attic. Put them in a place where they are easy to reach. We continually make memories and obtain things that we want to keep in a special place. Our memory bin should always be easy to retrieve so we can add new memories to the box.
So, if you don't already have a memory bin, find an empty box in your home or go purchase an inexpensive container. I just know you will love having a special place to keep your most important items. It just makes sense!
