When I first decided to homeschool my daughter, I had no idea how it would work in our small house. I already have my home office in my bedroom, which is definitely not ideal. There's not enough space for a dedicated home office, much less a homeschool room. So, I had to get creative. As I also have a toddler to take care of, it made sense to do schoolwork in a central location. My daughter and I decided upon doing most of her lessons at the kitchen table. The table provides ample room for all three of us to sit and work on things together.
There was only one problem...I got tired of carrying all of the supplies back and forth from the bookshelf in the back of the house to the kitchen table. I wasn't sure how to fix the problem, as my kitchen is already lacking in storage space and efficiency. I spent a lot of time thinking about the best way to keep homeschool supplies in the kitchen without it being an eyesore. I also wanted it out of the way of cooking and cleaning up each day.
I then proceeded to think about storage that already works for me. I have a drawer unit in my bedroom that houses my online teaching supplies. It takes up very little space and is easy to organize and label items. I wasn't sure if it would work well for homeschool supplies, but I thought I might as well try it. It was the best idea I could come up with. So, I shopped around for the cheapest drawer unit and got it the very next day. The verdict? I could not be happier with my decision!

We have been using the drawer system for a few months now, and it works perfectly for our needs. There was just one thing lacking - labels. I wanted labels, so we would know where everything goes.
How I Created Labels
First, I went through our school supplies to determine my categories.
I chose:
Writing
Spelling
Reading
Math
Science
History
Electives
Games (Reading/Spelling)
Games (Math)
Lily (Pre-K Learning Supplies for my toddler)
I got my Cricut machine and went to work.
After cutting the labels, I applied transfer tape to make it easier to place them on the drawers. I am very pleased with the final result, although in hindsight I think it would have looked better if I made all of the text the same size. I was focused on making all words the same length, but using the same text size would probably look best. I may change it in the future, but it's working great now!
My daughter can retrieve and put items away quickly. If my husband helps out with school, he doesn't have to ask where things are. It also makes it easy for me to keep track of all of our lessons.
If you're a homeschool parent, classroom teacher, or online teacher, leave a comment and let me know how you organize your teaching materials. Thanks so much for reading! I'll catch ya in the next one. Bye!
