My Motivation for Minimalism

I have always been a fairly organized person. I love having file folders, baskets, and storage bins. The Container Store is a dream come true. I was the college student who had a special filing system for bills. When I received them, I paid them immediately and filed them away. Easy peasy! Then something changed........................................................

I became a mom! One of the most honorable titles I have ever been given is that of "Mama." But with that title came added clutter, added stress, and less time to deal with unimportant things. With two children, I couldn't keep up. I felt like I was literally drowning in "stuff." I was suffocating under the weight of worldly possessions. I knew this wasn't what God wanted, and it certainly wasn't making me happy. Something had to be done. So, I looked around and thought - What can I get rid of today? (CRICKETS)

My heart cried out, "Come on, Sierra. You know you can't breathe with all the stuff.

Just let something go. Get rid of that scrapbook paper."

Me: "But....I love to scrapbook!"

My heart: "But, do you have time to scrapbook?"

Me: "Well, no...but...I will...someday."

But let me ask you something. What's more important - someday or TODAY? Despite the internal struggle, I knew the answer was, without a doubt, TODAY.

So, I began to get rid of one thing at a time - one piece of trash, one item to donate, one to recycle, one item to sell. With each thing removed from my home, I felt a bit of weight lift, a twinge of excitement, and a blip of peace.

Was starting easy? Not at all.

Does it get easier every single day? Absolutely!

Has it been worth every pain I felt? Most certainly!

Have I ever regretted tossing something? Not really.

Have others always supported me? Definitely not.

But if I could go back in time, I would say, "Start sooner. Stop buying. Stop accepting." Just BE.

BE content. BE satisfied. BE simple. BE minimal. BE happy.

My hope is that I can encourage you to live a life that is more minimal and simple, so you can just BE.

Until next time, Sierra <3
