Minimal Makeup Collection

Updated: Sep 25, 2022

I have never felt very confident in my makeup skills and have always kept a very simple look. Needless to say, I don't need many supplies. I also don't buy high end products that cost a lot. I have always been very money conscious and could never justify spending a lot of money on something when I can get a similar item much cheaper and it works just as well for me. I am definitely a novice when it comes to makeup, but simplifying my makeup collection has provided to be a satisfying experience. So, let's look at the type of products I own and how many of each.

PRIMER (1)

I start with primer which smooths out my dry skin and helps makeup go on smoothly. I love the Hard Candy Mattifying Primer. It's very budget-friendly and easy to use. You can usually find it at Walmart or Amazon.

FOUNDATION (1-2)

My most-used product is foundation. I have dry skin, so I have never liked

powder foundation as I feel it dries out my skin even more. I also feel that liquid makeup is too 'cakey' and makes my face feel heavy and splotchy. I opt for a cream powder. My go-to foundation is Covergirl & Olay Simply Ageless Instant Wrinkle-Defying Foundation. While I'm not that worried about wrinkles yet, this foundation matches my skin so well, goes on smoothly, contains sunscreen, and feels like the creamiest makeup ever. I am absolutely in love! It's also cheaper than my previous foundation. Win-Win!

EYESHADOW (1-2)

My second most-used product is eye shadow. My favorite colors for my eyes are shades of brown, cream, pink, or blue. I really love the creamy eyeshadow from Revlon. It provides a light, shimmery look and is available in multiple colors. I usually have one or two small eyeshadow palettes in my collection at any given time. The inventory isn't overwhelming, and I have a few different colors to choose from.

BLUSH (1)

Less often, I use a tiny bit of blush in a very light shade. I usually prefer a light shade of pink or peach. I love this Physicians Formula Blush, because it's much healthier for your skin. It also contains multiple beautiful colors of blush, so you can change up your look each day.

EYELINER (1)

On rare occasions, I use eyeliner. While I think it really helps to make the eyes pop, I don't feel very confident using it. I feel like I just make a mess of it. I have tried a few colors, but I prefer black. If you need a great eyeliner at a great price, I recommend Elf Waterproof Eyeliner.

MASCARA (1)

Recently, I have started using mascara regularly. I think it's gorgeous and really helps to make my eyes pop. I also like that it darkens and lengthens my lashes, as mine aren't really that long. I prefer black waterproof mascara, and my current favorite is Covergirl Lash Blast Volume Mascara.

LIPSTICK (1)

Lipstick is a tricky one for me. I don't like the 'cakey' feel of most lipsticks, but I don't like the greasy feel of lip gloss. I'm just picky. I also can't seem to find a way to keep it off my teeth. Lol. But on the occasion that I feel it necessary or want to add some color to my lips, I like to have one on hand in my collection. I have recently been using the Revlon ColorStay Matte Lip Crayons. They go on creamy and add a little color without overpowering.

SETTING SPRAY (1)

I didn't discover setting spray until a few years ago, but I am so grateful I did! It is amazing how much it helps set my makeup and keep it from rubbing off throughout the day. Again, I am happy with the budget-friendly option. My personal favorite is Hard Candy Matte Setting Spray. You can find this product at Walmart as well.

Remember

At the end of the day, only you can decide the type and how many of each product to keep. There are two important things to keep in mind when cultivating your makeup collection. First, make sure your collection comfortably fits into its designated space. Secondly, don't keep so many products that it is really overwhelming for you to find what you are looking for. It should be relaxing to put on makeup and get yourself ready for the day, not a chore because you have to dig through endless buckets of products just to find your favorite mascara. While makeup can hide imperfections and help boost self-confidence, I think it's important to remember the following quote by Marilyn Monroe: "A smile is the best makeup any girl can wear."

Until next time,

Sierra <3
