We've discussed how to declutter items, as well as specific categories of items to declutter. Now, it's time to discuss what to do with the clutter you are getting out of your home. While it's best to give the item a second life, that isn't always possible. Here are five things to do with outgoing clutter, so you can get the items out quickly and easily.
1. Sell
I often hesitate to offer this as an option, because I know from past experience that trying to sell items can greatly stall one's decluttering progress. If you are considering selling some of the items you have decluttered, I think there should be some guidelines for what makes the cut and what doesn't. If you're planning to sell it online, a couple of dollars probably isn't worth the effort. A luxury item, antique, or more expensive item may be worth your time.
Consider the following questions when deciding whether or not to sell something:
1) Do I really need the income?
2) How much is the item worth to someone else?
3) What will it cost me to sell the item? (Consider gas to transport it, time dealing with potential buyers, etc.)

2. Regift
I think regifting is a wonderful option when decluttering new items. However, it is important that you don't give it to someone who gave it to you first. Also, consider whether or not the recipient would like the item or if you're simply trying to reuse something instead of purchasing something new. If you have a new makeup palette that your niece would love, go ahead and regift it. If you have a potholder with a rooster on it, you probably shouldn't gift it to your dad unless he really likes to cook and also likes roosters. Always be mindful when regifting so the recipient doesn't feel like an afterthought.
3. Donate
Donating is my favorite way to give new life to the items I declutter. I feel really good about getting rid of items because I know they will go to a second home to hopefully be loved and cherished. Donating items keeps them out of your home and out of the landfill. It also keeps others from needing to purchase brand-new items, saving them time and money and even lowering their carbon footprint.
4. Recycle
When items aren't worth selling, regifting, or donating, recycling is a wonderful option. Plastic, glass, cardboard, paper, furniture, electronics, and even clothing can often be recycled. Just check with your convenience center and other local facilities to see which items are accepted for recycling.
5. Throw Away
Unfortunately, there are times when you cannot justify giving the item a second life. While it's a bummer to create waste, the twinge of guilt you feel when throwing stuff away is a great motivator to not repeat the mistake. With each bag of trash, you remove, let it be a reminder to make more intentional purchases in the future. The more you declutter, the more mindful you will be when bringing new items into your home.
